Last week I posted links on this blog back to pages that had yet to be indexed. I was testing how long it would take google to scan and/or list those pages. In the case of my test, google has yet to locate these pages. This doesn't go along with what I have been finding. In most cases I have been finding that google quickly (within a day or two) scans my pages even if it doesn't list them. I wonder if this has anything to do with the holiday weekend.

I will do an additional test here and see what happens. Below are some additional links to two different websites. I will check them out tomorrow and see where we are at.

I continue to spend a lot of time working on ways to get might site listed better and better in the search engines. Each day I take another step forward and each day I feel like I take four or five steps back. The more I learn the more questions I have. Some of the questions that keep spinning around in my head are...

What sites help me get get listed better?

What sites, if any, hurt my listing in the search engines?

Is it better to flood the system in one day or to spread out my submissions to these other sites over time?

Is it better to create 1000 new pages on my website the same day or should I add just a handful of pages each day?

I'll continue to work through this and see if I can answer any of these questions.

Just about ready to post our first video

I posted the other day about how creating a video isn't as easy as it appears. Getting listed in 11 minutes does take far more than 11 minutes. We have spent the entire week prepping to post 2 videos. The process has been very time consuming. I will note that the next video won't take as long because we have our templates worked out but still, it will take time.

Some of the things we had to do include finding our keywords, writing our titles, writing descriptions for blogs, writing a news release and writing the video description we will post with the video. We also had to signup for accounts so we can post our information in various places.

If all goes well we will be posting at least one video today.

Your Keyword Tip For the Day:
Keywords are KING. Before you even start working on your video, come up with 6 Keywords/Keyphrases that you will want to use for your project. For example, if your video is going to be about fluorescent dimmers, make sure that fluorescent dimmer and/or fluorescent dimmers is included in your keyword list.

Better listings in google? HA!!!!

So it's been a long weekend of frustration. All the sudden we are no longer getting orders from our free traffic. This is very odd. I checked and were still getting traffic, just no orders. What could it be? Did google dance and all our listings change and now the only free traffic we are getting is traffic from people that are not buying? Was it just a bad weekend and nobody was buying? Maybe the weather was nice and all the normal shoppers spent the weekend at the lake.

If you have ever felt the way I'm feeling right now you totally understand the frustration. We work day after day to get better listings in google and all we get is bad traffic and no orders.

I just have to keep telling myself to help my head up and press forward. It will all work out in the end. If you have any tips, please post them below.

First Federal Savings & Loan Customer Appreciation Day

I have a great Customer Service tip to pass along today. Last Friday I dropped by my local bank. It happens to be a Savings & Loan.

I've been banking at First Federal Savings & Loan in Independence, Kansas for nearly 30 years. They have always worked hard to take care of their customers. On this day the president of the bank handed me a red rose and a thank you card and ask me to give this to my wife. I also noticed a table with a variety of goodies and was told that earlier in the day employees were walking around downtown handing out donuts and other stuff.

This day was Customer Appreciation Day and each employee brought something they could give out to customers as they came in that day. It didn't have to be much, just something small to make the customers feel good.

So, the tip for today is to "do something nice for your customers today".

"Get listed in google using video in 11 minutes". Yes, it's that easy, it just takes 11 minutes. HMMMMM, ever told you about that bridge in Florida I have for sale?

Well, as we have learned over the last couple of days, yes, we can get Google to scan our websites quickly and even get them listed for certain general key-phrases. Even the links in the page normally get scanned fairly quickly and all this just using a simple blog post. If Blogs work this well I can only imagine how fast a video on YouTube might get listed.

So, time to get started. It's time to do a video. Get going now, it only takes 11 minutes. Come on now, go go go. Better hurry, your 11 minutes is almost gone and you haven't even pulled the camera out of the case. What's going on?

OK, that's not fair. We all know you can't get listed using videos in 11 minutes. You can't even get your camera out of the case and be ready to get started in 11 minutes. There are many decisions to be made. You need to decide where your going to film this video. Who is going to be in the video? Who is going to write the script? Oh yes, you have to actually write the script. Then you need to practice practice practice. Now you get started and you are in Take 1, 2 and now 3. If your like me you will "Take" all day and never get done. So your not like me and your done filming now but you have to edit it. What software you going to use? Not only do you have to find the right editing software but yes, it's likely to cost you some money. Found your software? Now you need to edit it, which isn't as easy as click click click. Now it's ready to go.....

Oh, so now after days of pain, not 11 minutes, you are ready to go. All you have to do is upload it, NOT. You have to create account after account on Video websites and upload to each one. The experts may tell you to upload in multiple formats to get more listings and to support more platforms and to use more keywords. This takes more time. Don't forget to work on your keywords and yes, you need to make sure the site your video will point to is ready to go.

So now it's uploaded. Your all done, right? Nope!!! Now you have to link to it. Do you have a blog? Do your friends have blogs? Facebook? Twitter? OK, you don't have any friends so now you pay a service to help with this. I've found services anywhere from $30 a month to $1000 a month and more that will help with this. More Money!!!!

Sorry about this. My intention was not to frustrate you or turn you off using Video to promote your site but to give you a dose of reality. You can't do it in 11 minutes. If you see a claim like this what they are talking about is once you submit your video, if you do it right and use their service your video will start showing up in search engines within a few minutes.

My suggestion... Plan well! Get all the right people involved! Plan on spending a few dollars! Done right, you should be very happy with your results.

Using your blog to get your video listed higher in search engines

I started a conversation yesterday about using video to help get you listed better in google and other search engines. Today I want to step back and take a quick look at blogs and how blogs are involved in this process.

I learned something yesterday that I'm sure others have known for a long time. The title of my blog post was "Get listed higher in google using video". Within a couple of minutes of posting my blog it was listed #2 on google for the key-phrase "Get listed higher in google using video". I checked a variety of other key-phrases like "get listed higher using video" and get listed higher in google" and I was listed very high in these also. I was very excited. It's as simple as creating a blog with all the right keywords and you get listed.

Well, so now it's 24 hours later. I turn on my computer and open IE to Google and I do a quick search of "Get listed higher in google using video". I'll give you one guess as to what I found. You guessed it, Nothing. My new listing that was showing up #2 the day before is gone. I scroll down, nothing. I check page 2, 3 and 4 and find nothing. My new #2 listing is nowhere to be found. I did check the page and the page is still in google, I just don't have my #2 spot.

Now, before you get totally frustrated please remember, this was one isolated example. I'll also note that I had links in the blog post to other pages that were not indexed. I checked these pages and they are indexed now. So, even if i lost my #2 I now have a page indexed that has never been indexed before.

So, the lesson learned in the last 24 hours is...

1. Blogs get indexed quickly by google (if your blog is on blogspot)
2. Don't get excited about fast high positions in google for your selected keywords.
3. Blogs, because they get listed quickly, can help you get other pages on other sites get listed more quickly if you link to them from your blog.

So, how does all this related to your videos? If you post a video on the Internet in one or more places, use your blogs to link to the video. This will help get your video listed faster for the keywords you want and will help google view the video as "more important".

Get listed higher in google using video

Looking for more traffic to your website? Join the club. I'd love to have more traffic for a keyword like "CHICAGO PERSONAL INJURY LAWYER" but getting listed high in google for keywords like this is very very tough. However, we have been doing our research and it seems that in addition to all the old methods of getting google to list your site well the search engines are loving video. If you talk to the "so called" experts all you have to do is submit your videos to all the current video websites and you will get listed high on search engines.

However, when working with a keyword like "CHICAGO PERSONAL INJURY LAWYER" there is a lot more work involved. You have to not only get your video submitted you need to link to your video from a variety of other sites and blogs and you need to use all the right keywords and yes, you have to hold your mouth just right.

What I have decided to do is spend the next few days/weeks blogging about what I learn each day. Maybe it will help you get listed higher and higher for your keywords.

Is Your Business On A High Or Low?

Ever try to run a business? Ever had good months? Ever had not so good months?

Running your own business can be very frustrating. I have friends that have a nice little store here in Indy and they sell Soy Candles. I have other friends that run an Italian Restaurant. Their Crab Cake weekend special is wonderful.

What do these two local businesses have in common with an online store that sells electrical stuff? We all have "down" months and we all have "up" months.

If your not careful the down months can get you down and the up months can put you on an uncontrollable high, but this really isn't what this blog post is about.

What I'm trying to figure out is "why the down month?". Did I do something? Did I fail to do something? Is it because it's summer? In our business we don't have a Christmas rush because we don't sell products that work well as gifts. Our sales are normally "steadily unpredictable" year round. You just never know when your going to have a good month and when your going to have a bad month.

Maybe the problem is in Google. We count on Google to bring us most of our customers. Maybe our listings changed and we are no longer getting visitors that want to buy. Maybe it's the economy. Maybe it's a change our competitors made. I just don't know but I hope to figure it out. If you have any thoughts feel free to comment. I'd like to hear what others have to say.

Spammers Be Gone

Spam email is a huge problem. Not only is it a pain for those receiving the unwanted email it's a huge problem for us that try to provide quality email services to our customers. Not only does it take a lot of our time it costs us a lot of money to stay updated with software and services that attempt to block the junk email.

I'm not sure what the solution is bu I'd love to hear what others have to say. I really don't want Washington to get involved but would love some oversight group that can quickly and easily identify the worst abuse and send out notifications to the rest of us. I'm sure automated systems could be used to help with this while keeping costs low and reasonable.

In our business where we sell Leviton Products we send out email notifications for order confirmations. Many of those email confirmations never get through because systems have been locked down so tight that almost no email gets through. I understand why people do this but it makes it difficult to communicate with customers. If your email account has features, I suggest keeping it open and using a program like Microsoft Outlook on your computer to isolate possible junk. You can then review your junk email a couple times a day and move good email back to your inbox. All future email from the sender will then come through ok.

Ok, so I'm done rambling now. I'm hoping over time that we can convince spammers that it's not worth their time and maybe eventually they will go away.

The Old Family Car

While watching a car ad this morning I started to think about the days of old. You remember, those days when you were in the back seat of the family car headed down the road at 70mph with all four windows open heading to somewhere special. You didn't think about it much but deep down you were happy you were in a car and not walking or riding in a covered wagon. It was more than enough that you could get where you were going in minutes, hours or days rather than days, weeks or months.

Flash forward now and step into the typical family car, or van as it may be. The typical family vehicle is now equipped with an advanced heating and cooling system that is vented to both the front and back areas. The seating is about as comfy as you can get and what would a family vehicle be without a way to watch your favorite movies. Oh wait, not just one but multiple. To eliminate fights each seat is equipped with it's own setup so everybody but the driver can enjoy the trip. God forbid everybody watch the same movie.

What ever happened to those fun trips in 100 degree weather with 4 windows down and fists flying as the kids faught over who saw the Alaska license plate first?

Enough for the fond memories. Time to get back to work in my home office selling Bussmann Fuses, Soy Candles and eating Crab Cakes.

Take Care Of Your Customers

Quality of Work and Customer Service are critical if you plan on staying in business today. In the business I'm in we maintain a website where we sell over 15,000 products including Wire & Cable, Leviton Products and Bussmann Fuses. Over the years we have found that it's far more difficult than just setting up a website. If we don't take care of our customers they won't come back and they won't tell their friends.

Over the weekend I was in my basement looking over things and I noticed a break in my duct vents for my AC and Heat. After inspecting the problem I realized that 12 years ago when it was install the person that had cut the section in question had cut it short. This person had then proceeded to put it into place and rather than cutting a new one he just taped it up and went on. Well, over time the tape came loose and the rest is history.

The following day I headed to the basement with my camera and took a series of pictures showing the problem and also showing that this was caused by the installer and not by the house shifting over time. I then headed down to the company that had installed it and handed the pictures to the manager. Without saying much he handed me a roll of tape to tape it back into place and told me they would be out in a few days to fix it. As of this writing I have not seen them but I expect them to show up soon. If they do, I will go back to them in the future. If they don't, I will bug them until they do and then will go elsewhere next time.

Take care of your customers. Whether you are selling Wire & Cable online or selling Hot Dogs on the street, if you don't take care of your customers you will be out of business soon.

No News In News

I was watching FOX this morning. They had some pieces on various subjects and the more I watched the more I got frustrated.

I might mention here that I watch FOX because I can't stand to watch the other channels.

My issue this morning is simple. FOX is constantly fishing and has no problem warping the facts to try to catch a fish that doesn't exist. They were saying that this girls BMI Report Card told her she was fat and in reality it did no such thing. FOX was trying to create a story out of nothing and kept trying to lead the girl and the mother down a path that didn't exist. I was happy when I saw the girl quickly correct the record.

I then see a piece where they lead-in to some interviews is telling me how outraged these people are and when they go to the prerecorded interviews the very first guy only says he is disappointed.

I am seeing this more and more and I expect more from FOX. The person doing the interview makes statements that are not in any form of the word true and the person being interviewed then has to stop and set the record straight before they can continue on.

There are enough good stories out there that are real News. Why does the media think they have to create stories? How about we spend 25 minutes reporting good positive news and 5 minutes reporting on the issues of the day? With 24 hours news and several channels to report it there is no need to bombard us minute with negative reporting. Tell me about the homeless person that was helped by a 7 year old or the retired person that changed the life of a child by reading to them. There is no need to spend 24 hours a day telling me how bad the world.

Malware & Spyware Fix

I've cleaned several systems with Combofix and in every case, it's removed almost everything. I normally then run Malwarebytes to get rid of everything else and I'm good to go.

Holmes on Homes

We have been watching a lot of the home improvement type shows over the last few months. Holmes on Homes is one of my favorites. My only problem with this show is as I do my work I'm always thinking "What would Holmes Do?" and all the sudden work and money increase. It's like Holmes is a little (or not so little) voice in my head and in every case I've been happy with the results of what the voice told me.

Sitting here in Independence Kansas I wonder what Holmes would tell me if he were to walk into my house. I have about 5 years of remodeling left and I know I have a long list of things that if Holmes would look at them he would scream and yell because I'm sure you would find problems with Code. However, I do have a list and hope to get it all resolved as soon as time and money are available.

Olympics & Task for the Day

I'm excited and looking forward to the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. I will be watching sporting events day and night, many of which I would never watch otherwise. I'm not sure what the draw is but the bug hits hard every couple of years. I don't get overly excited about the opening and closing ceremonies but do love the action. Check back for my comments as the Olympics proceed.

As for work today, I've been spending a lot of time trying to understand google and how it indexes the website we sell Leviton Products on. We currently have around 25,000 pages on the site but only 6400 have been indexed. It's not a case of google not being able to find our pages since we only have 200 pages on the entire site that have not been scanned. Google does see the pages, just chooses not to index them all. So, my task is to try to figure out why google is ignoring so many pages.

Enough for now. I have to get back to work. Heading to Brother's Railroad Inn for lunch today after a Neewollah meeting at Pizza Hut.

Super Bowl 2010

I've been thinking about the recent Super Bowl and all in all it was a pretty good game. We had a get together here in Independence with a number of friends that showed up. As always, no party, just party crashers. I just wish I would not of consumed as much food as I did. I don't know why the Super Bowl triggers me to eat but it does.

I was rooting for New Orleans, mainly because I was mad that the Colts threw that last two games of the season. I was however rooting for Indy to score near the end. It would of been fun to see an exciting couple of last minutes.

Food & Football... The season is over... Now it's time for the Masters!!

Time to get back to work selling Leviton Products and Bussmann Fuses.

Crab Cakes Rock

Last Friday night we journeyed out for dinner to Brother's Railroad Inn here in Independence, Kansas. It was Crab Cake night. I'm told Mike makes these from scratch with real crab meat. I believe it! They were wonderful. I was reminded of this tonight when we split a single leftover Crab Cake for dinner tonight at home. I highly recommend to everyone if you live in or around Independence, Kansas, schedule lunch or dinner at Brother's Railroad Inn.

My First Post

Here we are, setting up a blog. I've never done this before so I'm not sure what I am doing or where this is going but with every task you have to start somewhere.

I guess I will start out by noting that I host and maintain websites for a living with a strong focus on online stores. Our biggest store offers electrical products mfg by Leviton and Bussmann.
